Lund University is based in the city of Lund, close to Malmö (Sweden’s 3rd largest city) in the south of Sweden. This part of Sweden is very close to Denmark and Germany. The main campus buildings of Lund University are located in the centre of Lund and are an approximate 5-10 minutes' walk from the Lund railway station.

Lund has offered higher education since the founding of a studium generale in 1438, which provided training for prospective pastors. Now, the idea to establish a proper University in Lund was suggested for the first time by Bishop Peder Winstrup to King Karl X Gustav.

On 19 December 1666, the regency of Charles XI of Sweden took the decision to found Lund University, and the University was officially inauquarated on 28 January 1668. Now the 350th anniversary is approaching, we have chosen to celebrate both of these dates an the whole period between: from 19 December 2016 to 28 January 2018. Lund University (Swedish: Lunds universitet) is one of Europe's oldest, largest and most prestigious universities, consistently ranking among the world's top 100 universities.The university, located in the city of Lund in the province of Scania, Sweden, traces its roots back to 1425, when a Franciscan studium generale was founded in Lund next to the Lund Cathedral, making it the oldest institution of higher education in Scandinavia. After Sweden won Scania from Denmark in the 1658 Treaty of Roskilde, the university was founded in 1666 on the location of the old studium generale next to Lund Cathedral.
